Condensing water heaters offer faster water heating using their built-in coil-shaped heat exchanger that offers more heating surface area compared to a conventional water heater.
Unlike a conventional water heater, most condensing water heaters feature a burner at the top of the water heater to combust gas and heat the water. But while a conventional water heater may simply vent the exhaust gases up a chimney, a condensing water heater passes the combusted exhaust gases through a heat exchanger that extracts most of the heat energy out of the exhaust gases into the surrounding stored water. As a result, condensing water heaters can heat water more efficiently.

- Condensing water heaters work like conventional gas water heaters, with faster heating and better energy efficiency. Unlike a conventional gas water heater, a condensing water heater passes the combusted exhaust gases through a heat exchanger that extracts most of the heat energy out of the exhaust gases into the surrounding stored water. As a result, a condensing water heater is able to achieve an Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency (AFUE) rating of 95%.^
- Condensing Water Heaters are more energy-efficient than conventional vented water heaters because the hot combustion gases stay in the tank longer to extract most of the heat energy, thanks to the coil-shaped heat exchanger. Most condensing water heaters also have better insulation to reduce heat loss.
- While a Condensing Water Heater may look similar to a Conventional Vented Water Heater, they do require plumbing and electrical outlets in order to function. All Condensing Water Heaters require a standard power outlet to run the built-in fan that blows the combustion gases through the heat exchanger. They also require a drainpipe to expel the condensate from the combustion process.
