Hot Water That’s Just Right for Your Business

If your water heater broke down today, what would you do? Our experts can help you find the best solution for you water heaing problems. See our purchase, finance or rent options and upgrade your water heater today

As a crucial part of your business’ mechanical equipment, your commercial water heater provides potable water for drinking and cooking, sanitation capabilities in your kitchens for dishwashing and handwashing, and in cases where a heat exchanger is involved – space heating. With Natural Resources Canada estimating that 5.7% of the energy used in a typical commercial setting comes from your water heater, now is the time to see if yours is running at peak performance1.

A common reason for water heater failure is old age, contributing to any one of the following problems: leaks, temperature issues, taking too long to heat, strange noises, and dirty, rusty, or smelly water2. New water heaters have significant benefits over older water heaters, making now a good time to upgrade.

Today’s water heaters are constructed with improved materials

10-20 years ago, tanks were usually made with stainless steel and aluminum. Today’s units use advanced materials such as ceramics, which can provide greater insulation.

Today’s water heaters are more reliable

Since the average restaurant uses about 2 gallons of hot water per meal served, the durability and reliability of your water heater is crucial to staying in business4.

There are many cost considerations that go into the purchase of a new water heater including water heater efficiency, installation cost, annual operating cost, and useful life of the appliance. Remember: the operating cost will be greater than the purchase or rental price.

How to Choose the Right Water Heater

Here are some important considerations to consider when you are looking for conventional hot water tank:5

A) How much space do you have available?

You should take measurements for the area where your current tank sits, and include the space needed for plumbing, electrical and gas connections.

B) How large is your current tank, and is it big enough?

If your business is growing, and you run out of hot water frequently, you may want to consider a larger size. If you’ve recently added new fixtures to your building, such as more sinks or a new bathroom, you may need a larger tank as well. Tanks are measured in overall size (in litres or gallons) and heating power (in BTUs – British thermal units).

C) What are your energy efficiency requirements?

Some tanks are ENERGY STAR® certified; others are not. Some tanks come with more insulation built into the unit to help use less energy to maintain water temperature.

D) Do you want to convert from electric to gas?

E) What kind of venting options are required for your gas water heater?

  • Atmospheric venting water heaters rely on the air inside your home (specifically, the pressure and temperature difference) to push exhaust up the flue pipe and out of the home. They are the most common type of tank in homes today.
  • Direct vent water heaters are completely sealed from the air in your basement, and the combustion process is completely contained (air is piped in from outside and the exhaust is piped outside).
  • Power vented water heaters have an electric blower that cools the exhaust and helps push it up the pipe and out of the home.
  • Power direct venting combines the features of both.

Types of Water Heaters

TypeDescription
Electric Water Heaters:Are typically cylindrical and made of steel, lined with ceramic glass and insulated externally with foam. They feature an electric heating element that converts electricity into heat and because the element is immersed, all the heat is transferred to the water.
Conventional Water Heaters:Are vented using a chimney that allows the hot flue gases a path to rise and be exhausted from the building. These are typically used in retrofit applications.
Power Vented Water Heaters:Provide higher efficiencies than conventional water heaters. They also ensure the removal of flue gases by a fan blower, which should be the preferred type of water heater for any occupied building.
Power Direct Vent Water Heaters:Are similar to a power vent model, but the water heater pulls air directly from outside through an intake pipe and then exhausts the flue gases directly outside. This type of water heater should be used in hair salons, restaurants, and any business that has combustible products in the air. Direct vent water heaters also can help reduce negative pressure issues by pulling air from outside instead of from the inside environment.
Tankless Water Heaters:Provide instantaneous hot water and can be used in almost any application. The cost savings of only having to run the water heater when it is being used is the main attraction for using tankless water heaters.
Hybrid Tank Water Heaters:Are electric but utilize heat pump technology to provide cost and energy savings. Some can be up to 4 times more efficient than electric tanks6.
Boilers:Are used in high demand applications as they can store water in insulated storage tanks, reducing standby losses. This means the boiler will not have to run as frequently, providing you cost and energy savings, and prolonging the life of the equipment.
