Important Operational Information about your Rental Water Heater

In this regard we ask that you note the following

    • Always ensure the area near the water heater or any other natural gas appliance is free of flammable liquids, such as gasoline or paint thinners and other combustible materials.
    • All natural gas appliances require air for proper combustion and ventilation. Never store material around your natural gas water heater, or any other gas appliances. Ensure installations in tight enclosures have sufficient air supply from other areas of the home or directly from the outside.
    • Inspect the area around the water heater on a regular basis for any sign of water leakage. If you identify water leaking from the unit, please call Enercare for service and ensure that your floor drain is unobstructed. It is your responsibility to ensure that the water heater is located in an area with sufficient drainage in the vicinity and that the drainage is open and unrestricted, and we will therefore not be responsible for damage caused if the water heater leaks.
    • Never wrap your Enercare natural gas water heater with an insulating blanket. This could cause severe operational issues for the unit and may result in the production of carbon monoxide.
    • For your safety, if you smell gas, immediately open windows, don’t touch electrical switches, extinguish any open flame and IMMEDIATELY CALL YOUR NATURAL GAS SUPPLIER AND/OR DIAL 9-1-1.
    • Call Enercare for service if you see any sign of carbon/soot or rust on the bottom, sides or top of the water heater.
    • Never try to re-light the pilot on your rental water heater. Call Enercare for service.
    • Confirm the operation of the carbon monoxide detectors in your home by testing it on a regular basis. We recommend that you follow all manufacturer recommendations for testing and/or replacement of the carbon monoxide detectors in your home.
    • Inspect the vent connector (plastic or metal) coming from the top of the unit routing to the outside for cracks, separations or signs of water leakage. Call Enercare immediately for service if any defects are found.

If you own the home or premises in which the rental natural gas water heater is located, but do not reside there, please ensure that this information is brought to the attention of the residents of the home.

Enercare provides service as required on your rental water heater. Service can be scheduled 24 hours a day by calling us.

Thank you for choosing Enercare as your rental water heater provider.

Current Regulation for Gas Burning Appliances

On August 1, 2007, the Technical Standards & Safety Authority (TSSA) adopted new national code requirements regarding the installation of plastic venting systems for gas burning appliances such as water heaters, boilers and furnaces.

This new regulation mandates that any new or replacement appliance installation must be completed with a venting material which is marked and complies with the new standard ULC S636 piping rather than unmarked PVC, CPVC or ABS piping which had previously been used for many years. This new national code requirement applies to every home in Ontario. Accordingly, if you install new or replacement equipment in your home on or after August 1, 2007, at the time that you do so, you may also need to upgrade your venting.

NOTE: There is no requirement to upgrade venting for existing equipment that was installed before August 1, 2007. Meaning, there is no obligation for you to upgrade your venting if you are not replacing or installing new equipment. However, at the time that you choose to replace or install new equipment, you will need to ensure that venting for the new equipment meets the code requirements at that time. If you have questions regarding the variance process or any other enquiries related to this requirement, visit tssa.org.

Our Service Technicians and Installers will happily answer all your questions about this or you can call for more details.

    Notice Regarding Return of Equipment

If you are returning a rental water heater belonging to Enercare, you will need to follow the steps outlined below. Any failure to return the water heater and follow these steps may prevent our ability to process the return and/or terminate a rental water heater contract.

Drop-off process for returning your rental water heater

All Enercare rental water heaters being returned to Enercare drop off locations require the following steps to be taken:

    1. Prior to removal, the Enercare account holder, or a duly authorized agent acting on behalf of the account holder (“Agent”), shall contact Enercare at 1-855-658-5700 to confirm account and tank details necessary for validation and to initiate the return process.
    2. The water heater manufacturer’s rating plate must remain attached to the water heater being returned. This rating plate will be removed at the drop off location at the time of return.

Anyone seeking to act as an Agent must provide Enercare with a valid agency appointment signed by the account holder. For further details, please review our notice regarding agency appointments.

Please see the listing of Enercare drop off locations for hours of operation.

    Water Heater Buyout Schedule

Water Heater Rental vs. Buyout: Which Option is Best?

If your water heater is eight years old or more, you might wonder if you should just buy it out. But continuing your rental agreement for an older water heater gives you ongoing coverage for maintenance and repairs* — even after the manufacturer’s warranty is done.*

Since older water heaters, like all equipment, may be prone to more break downs near the end of their lifetime after the manufacturer’s warranty has expired and a single repair (e.g. ventor assembly repair+) could cost more than what’s left on your rental agreement, buying out could actually end up costing you more. For more information please call 1-855-356-3127.
